Artist Statement

For me, painting and creating art are not so much a choice as they are a part of life—a way of living, seeing, and bringing to the surface things that cannot always be expressed through words.

My creative process does not begin with a clearly defined idea or a predetermined message. More often, before I know what is going to emerge, I enter a deeply focused inner space—a state in which the boundaries between thinking and making begin to dissolve. Music, silence, colour, and the atmosphere of my studio can help me enter this state. The painting then begins, and the work gradually reveals itself through the process.

I do not try to turn the unconscious into a concept or a statement. Instead, I try to interfere as little as possible and to trust what is unfolding in the moment. Even my choice of colours is not always conscious. At times, the palette that gradually develops on my worktable becomes part of the direction of the painting before I am even fully aware of what is happening.

The human figure appears throughout parts of my work, but I do not necessarily see it as a representation of a particular concept or as a vehicle for a predetermined message. Sometimes, the figure is simply a place through which something internal can reveal itself. For this reason, I prefer not to over-explain the work, but to allow the work itself to speak.

I have come to believe that I should, as much as possible, remain in the service of painting rather than in the service of an explanation I can give for it. Painting is both a form of introspection and an act of release for me—a movement between what I know and what I do not yet know. Perhaps an essential part of creating is precisely this ability to remain restless, to make, and to continue.
